The restaurant’s name comes from the British film The Cruel Sea, 1953. Directed by Charles Frend and produced by Leslie Norman this is a classic World War II adventure about a British convoy escort ship and its officers.

Based on the best selling novel The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monsarrat. It is a portrayal of the war between the Royal Navy and Germany's U-boats from the viewpoint of the British naval officers and seamen who served in escort vessels during World War II.
